Membrane technologies are energy efficient separation processes which have found great success for water reuse and desalination. More energy could be saved if membrane technologies are adopted for other separations. Some of the emerging membrane separation technologies are organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN), membrane distillation and gas separation membranes. Among them, OSN has attracted significant attention for its potential solvent recovery applications in pharmaceutical, petrochemical and food industries. OSN membranes can be applied for separating organic solvents and solutes (MW from 200-1400 Da) and recycle the organic solvents for reuse in industries. The development of suitable membranes with both high robustness and separation performance is very important for their applications. Therefore, this symposium will focus on the membrane development for OSN and the other emerging membrane technologies.
