Seeking Environmentally Friendly, Delayed Release Function for Borax

Background / Description

Borax, a.k.a. sodium tetraborate, is a common compound used in many different industries for different applications. Borax crystals are readily available in its anhydrous, pentahydrate, or decahydrate levels of water of crystallisation. When borax is exposed to water, it forms the highly reactive tetrahydroxy borate anion, B(OH)4-, which causes specific chemical reactions within a very short period of time.

Our client is looking for an environmentally friendly, delayed release function for borax upon trigger, in order to maintain an inactivate state for 2 – 3 hours. This would enable a longer handling time, to facilitate transfer as a liquid/slurry, before any chemical reactions set in.

Technical Specifications

This technology is expected to have the following properties:

  1. Environmentally friendly
  2. Enable delayed release of borax for 2 – 3 hours upon contact with water
  3. Non-oxidising
  4. Non-biocidal

What we are not interested in

Encapsulation by alginate, guar gum, etc. and polymers that are known to react with borax.
