Plastic pollution is one of the world’s fastest-growing environmental issues. Increased awareness and legislation have accelerated the demand for plastic recycling solutions and also brought about new opportunities for innovation across the plastic value chain.

At the Emerging Technology Forum on Plastic Recycling jointly organised by IPI and Helsinki Business Hub on 15 April 2021, Singapore and Finland industry experts discussed the challenges surrounding low residual value of plastic packaging, complex packaging materials and contamination in plastic waste stream.

Steven Lee, Innovation Manager, Manufacturing, Infocomm and Built Environment presented his findings on the regulatory, market and technology trends and drivers that are catalysing growth in the local and international plastic recycling industries. He also emphasised the need for companies to be proactive in technology development, in view of strong interest from value chain players as well as the availability of environmentally friendly and energy efficient technologies that will encourage further collaboration today.

Technical experts from Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI), VTT and Neste shared novel chemical recycling technologies including solvent-based recycling, depolymerisation and pyrolysis. Manufacturers can adopt these innovative solutions to convert plastic waste into high-value products and subsequently, transition to a circular economy.
