BIOGRAPHY

Dr Ritu Bhalla is currently the Senior Conexus Manager for the Agriculture Research and Innovation (AGRI) Centre at Republic Polytechnic. At the centre, she drives multidisciplinary projects leveraging on plant science, advanced systems for production, automation and IoT to support increased production of food. 

Ritu is leading industry collaborations and R&D, looking particularly into research investigations leading to improving the crop quality. She has over 20 years of research experience in understanding the pathways that lead to the production of natural products in plants; and understanding the functional genomics of plants that influence primary functions of growth and yield, as well as secondary functions such as production of essential oils and flavonoids. She has also been involved in projects about the use of plant products in functional food formulations.

She has worked on many plants such as scotch mint, lemongrass, rice, jatropha curcas, basil, coriander, leafy vegetables, etc. She is well versed in techniques like plant tissue culture, biochemical assays, plant mutagenesis, hydroponics and plant metabolomics. She also has several papers and patents to her credit.

Understanding Pathways for Secondary Metabolism
  • Essential oils and other natural products in plants are synthesized via extensive pathways in plants
  • Enhancing the production of compounds of interest can be achieved by tweaking these pathways
