BIOGRAPHY

Dr Wong Choon Yue is a Senior Research Fellow in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. His research focuses mainly on interface design and human-robot interaction (HRI), which led to the development of the EDGAR series of humanoid robots that is best known for being the robotic co-host at the 2017 National Day Parade in Singapore.

He is also the CEO and Founder of MAJU Robotics, a start-up spun off from NTU. Dr Wong continues to deploy humanoid robots, while at the same time also developing new robotics solutions such as disinfection robots for use in public spaces, as well as robotic grippers for applications such as in logistics.

Prior to joining NTU, he was with TECH Semiconductor (now Micron Semiconductor Asia), managing the Dry Etch operations of semiconductor manufacturing. In addition to robot development, Dr Wong also speaks at public events to share his robot-building experience and to inspire budding young scientists.

PORTFOLIO

Robotic Grippers for Hospital Environment

This is a research project between Nanyang Technological University, National Robotics Programme Office (NRPO), and Centre for Healthcare Assistive & Robotics Technology (CHART). It involves the study of three scenarios for gripper deployment within the Changi General Hospital: Linen picking, surgical tool picking, and medication picking. The intention of this project is to reduce time spent by hospital staff on menial and laborious tasks, such as stacking linens and retrieving medications from a drawer.

The expertise provided in the development of these robotic grippers lies primarily in sound mechanical, product design and aesthetics based on considerations such as payload, available space, human traffic and speed of operation. In addition to this, the know-how pertaining to ease of integration to other system components such as the robot arm and system software has also been applied.

Dr Wong contributed to the design, construction and low-level programming of these robotic grippers. Each gripper developed is part of a larger system that would include a robot arm, a vision module as well as a processor which controls each system component.

Humanoid Robot for Human-Robot Interaction

This development work was originally funded by the National Research Foundation and administered by the National Robotics and Research Programme Office. There are two humanoid robots developed in this series: EDGAR-1 and EDGAR-2.

The provided expertise for this project is multifaceted since the EDGAR robots are developed from scratch, based on original design. This includes the conceptual and aesthetic design, mechanical and electronic design, as well as fabrication and assembly. Additionally, Dr Wong provided the lower-level programming for moving the robots' actuators.
