BIOGRAPHY

Dr Sundaramurthy Jayaraman is a Senior R&D Scientist in Environmental & Water Technology Center of Innovation, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. He has been working closely with industries in developing industrial scale-up processes and sustainable technologies for advanced materials development from wastes, material formulation, polymer and nanomaterial synthesis, electrospinning, thin films and coatings, functional composite nanomaterials, energy storage devices, and supercritical fluids technologies. He served as principal investigator for more than 12 industrial R&D projects and grants funded by industrial collaborators and government agencies such as Ministry of Education, National Environment Agency and National Research Fund.

He has a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, received his Master's degree in Industrial Pollution Abatement and obtained his PhD degree in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering from National University of Singapore. He has published more than 60 SCI (Science Citation Index) papers with an h-index of 31.

PORTFOLIO

Conversion of Non-biodegradable Polymers, Biomass and Oils to High Value Materials

Developed a highly efficient chemical vapor deposition process to convert non-biodegradable polymers, waste oils and solvents to a high market value product, i.e. Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs). The equipment and process were investigated to improve the process yield and quality of the CNTs. The CNTs produced by the process were of high quality. A patent was filed on the proprietary system and the whole CNT synthesis process. The CNT system was licensed to a local partner and the system was under testing at client's site for commercial production of CNTs.

Sustainable Process Using Supercritical Fluid Technology

Designed and developed multipurpose supercritical fluid technology process for extraction, infusion and encapsulation of high value solutes. The process required no or less chemicals depending on the conditions. Collaborated with an industrial partner to extract high value essential oils from the biomasses. The supercritical fluid process was able to achieve higher essential oil yield and high anti-oxidant properties compared with conventional hydro-distillation or solvent extraction methods. Also established the supercritical fluid process for chemical-less drying, cleaning and thin film deposition.
