Background/Description

This company is seeking a process technology to upcycle spent malt grains into sustainable food grade packaging materials and products. These packaging materials can be modified based on the needs of end customers.

Spent malt grains from beer brewery are rich in minerals, fibres and protein and are usually handled to farmers to be as nutritious animal feed. The company is thus seeking for new and innovative technologies to move this functional byproduct up the value chain to upcycle them into food packaging materials and products. 

Technology Specification

The technology of the packaging material derived from spent malt grains should have (but are not limited to) the following properties:

  • Stable
  • Food grade
  • Impart good barrier properties
  • Compatible to ink printing
  • Able to undergo conventional polymeric processes to produce flexible or rigid packaging products
  • New material produced may be converted into coatings for food packaging/trays/containers
