Background/Description

A Singapore based company is seeking materials and/or chemical compounds that can be incorporated into labels for colorimetric detection of Hydrogen Sulfide gas, H2S, in the ambient atmosphere.  

The company is using printing means to offer print media such as holograms as well as microfluidic testkits for their clients. They are familiar with the traditional printing technologies, such as flexograph, letterpress, silkscreen and digital printing techniques, and they have the capability to provide functional printing in the areas of microfluidics and conductive inks. The proposed technology should be compatible with these printing techniques.

Technology Specification

  • The solution that is sought could be a material or chemical compound.
  • It can be a nanoparticle or micro-scale particles or equivalent, with the ability to function and applied as required.
  • The solution would be applied by printing techniques, and thus needs to be compatible with common ink solvents and ink particles.
  • The solution be sensitive Hydrogen Sulfide gas (H2S), so that when exposed to it, the particles will react immediately and provide indications of the presence of the stimuli.
  • It is envisioned that the solution will react to the H2S gas and cause a change in colour thereby indicating its presence. It is preferable that the change in colour is significant such that it can be detected visually, and does not require the use of special detectors or transducers to detect such responses.
  • The technology should be compatible with substrates, such as paper, PP, HDPE, LDPE, PET, PETE, PVC, i.e. plastic that are commonly used by the company.
  • The sensitivity of the technology in respond to the presence of H2S gas should be as low as 5ppm.
  • It will useful if the technology will be able to indicate the different level of concentration in steps of 5ppm, 10ppm, 15ppm and 20ppm.
  • The labels will be used in outdoor applications. Hence, the chemicals must be stable when exposed to tropical environment, such as humidity (70-90% RH), rain, UV, solar radiation, etc., and should not react to other gaseous stimuli that could be present in the environment.
