Air fresheners are air-care products that dispense perfume in rooms, lavatories or cars. The air care products can be categorised into gels, sprays, candles, wicks and membrane air fresheners. Their global market value is expected to reach around US$12 billion by the year 2023. Among the products, membrane-based air fresheners have the advantages of small sizes and continuous non-energised perfume delivery.
The application of membranes for controlled perfume delivery is an emerging field. Ideally, the membranes are able to release a perfume at a constant rate during their usage life in changing environments such as air temperature and velocity. However, the perfume delivery rates are essentially evaporation rates when the membrane is wet by the perfume compounds through the capillary action. Only after circumventing the capillary action, the design of new membranes may be able to control the perfume delivery.
This invention relates to a membrane-based apparatus without an energy source, for superior delivery of volatile materials to the atmosphere in a continuous and consistent manner, compared to existing membrane air freshener products. The performance is shown to be superior at both room and elevated temperatures.
TECHNOLOGY FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONS
The conventional air freshener has a very high release rate for the first 2 days and depletes the highly volatile compounds. In this invention, a very consistent vapour release rate can be achieved through a novel setup whereby evaporation of the volatile compounds is controlled and regulated by membranes.
As temperature increases the evaporation rate, the apparatus of this invention shows that it is able to reduce the effect of temperature on the evaporation rate, compared to a commercial membrane-based air freshener.

Membrane based liquid air freshener is attracting market interest because of its small size and continuous delivery of perfume compounds without any external powering devices.
