A Nordic company has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) technology that can improve the prediction accuracy and provide alerts of dangerous situations. The AI technology has been successfully applied to predict traffic hazards in a Smart Pedestrian Crosswalk (SPC) solution to make crosswalks safer. This can help reduce the number of traffic accidents, which are often caused by poor decisions that road users make due to a lack information about the traffic environment.


This smart traffic sign comprises a high-tech electronic signage positioned at either side of a pedestrian crosswalk to alert pedestrians and other road-users to danger.

Video and radar data technologies are used to monitor the situation around the crosswalk and sensor fusion technology merges the data from multiple sensors to reduce the amount of uncertainty involved. Then narrow AI algorithms are applied to the collected data to predict the moving trajectories of the road users. 

When traffic hazards such as speeding cars are detected, vulnerable road-users will be alerted through LED lights on the SPC that light up. Drivers of connected vehicles approaching the crossing will be notified of vulnerable pedestrians in the vicinity with vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication, a vehicular communication system. 

Besides traffic conditions, the sensors are able to provide a 360° live image feed, as well as detect temperatures, air quality, humidity, luminosity, visibility, noise levels and any sagging traffic lights. In the presence of pedestrians and vehicles, the AI technology can classify and count them, in addition to providing data on location, speed measurement and vehicle licence plate information.
