Odorless On-site Food and Organic Waste-to-Resources Technology

Environment, Clean Air & Water - Biological & Chemical Treatment

A company has developed a compact and highly efficient on-site solution to convert organic waste into electricity, heat for hot water and fertilizer.  Based on anaerobic digestion technology, this solution breaks down organic waste such as food waste, horticultural waste and animal waste using microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. The process produces biogas which is then converted into electricity and heat. Another by-product is nutrient-rich digestate which can be used as fertilizer.

This technology is also more cost-effective solution than most, if not all, of the current waste disposal methods. The waste conversion process has been designed to be completely odorless and is therefore particularly suitable for industrial and commercial premises for hygiene reason.

The company is seeking collaboration opportunities and investment of up to S$1 million to co-develop, scale-up and test-bed their system. The company is also seeking partners who can provide technology and know-how to improve their system in terms of digestion efficiency, energy generation efficiency, scale-up as well as footprint requirement.

This is a fully automated solution with waste weighing and loading, data cloud uploading and remote monitoring. The setup can also be integrated with a conveyance system to minimise manpower requirement.

Most organic waste including food waste, horticultural waste, animal manure, liquid waste can be accepted as feedstock. Homogenous feedstocks and constant daily quantity are preferred, nonetheless the system is versatile enough to cope with mixed organic waste and varied daily waste quantity.

An optional waste de-contamination system can be added to remove inorganic materials and further improve feedstock quality. The waste treatment process has been designed to be odorless and the system does not require topping up of microbes. Each tonne of feedstock can concurrently produce:
- 200-400kWh of electricity
- Heat for 2000L of hot water at 90°C
- 1000L of liquid fertilizer.

- Food waste
- Horticultural waste
- Animal manure

Market Trends & Opportunities

On-site food / organic waste recycling eliminates the need for waste transportation and reduces the incineration tonnage and moisture content. These are some of the reasons why Singapore Zero Waste Masterplan requires all new industrial and commercial premises to treat their organic waste on-site from 2024. In addition, this newly developed solution is net energy positive, i.e. it produces more energy than it consumes. Based on Singapore Standard on food waste management, converting food waste into energy is also preferred over other existing on-site food digestion methods that produce only fertilizer or grey water.

This technology offers customers one of the most environmentally sustainable methods for on-site organic waste recycling. The system allows full remote monitoring and requires minimal operating manpower. Due to its unique odorless conversion process and resulting good hygiene, the solution gives great environmental with minimal adverse impact on-site but in return. On the financial front, the system achieves attractive return on investment which increases with increasing waste tonnage.
