A Spanish biotech company has developed two innovative neurocosmetic ingredients: the first one has been designed for the daily care of sensitive skin, and it is based on an improved version of a natural compound, capsaicin, the active ingredient works to improve skin barrier function and moisturisation, protect against oxidative stress and provide quick itch relief for sensitive skins.

The second ingredient has been developed to address itchy and reactive scalp. Thanks to its double action over sensory neurons and immune cells, it diminishes itch and inflammation, leading to a reduction in scalp redness, desquamation and, therefore, dandruff reappearance.

Both ingredients have been tested in both adults and children and are patented.

The company is keen to establish partnerships in commercial agreements with technical assistance with startups and SMEs of all sizes.


The company is offering two ingredients - one for sensitive skin and the other for itchy scalp.

1.     Active ingredient for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is a multifaceted, chronic relapsing inflammatory skin condition, with a prevalence of 25% in early childhood and 7–10% in adulthood. Sensitive and atopic skin manifest as eczematous skin eruptions with pruritus. The peripheral neurosensorial system is the responsible of itching and burning sensation. These sensations are mainly mediated by the capsaicin receptor, TRPV1, that is expressed in sensory neurons, and skin cells. Therefore, development of novel capsaicin analogues is a promising approach to manage skin conditions related to pruritus and neurogenic inflammation.

 Addressing these issues, the novel active ingredient is have a 360º effect over sensory neurons and skin cells:

 Improvement of the skin barrier function and moisturisation

  • Protection against oxidative stress
  • Reduction of the itching sensation

The ingredient improves on capsaicin, a TRPV1 modulator but without its side effects. While capsaicin produces a burning sensation, the new ingredient has an opposite, calming effect. It reduces TRPV1 activation directly, thus reducing the itch sensation at its source. Furthermore, the ingredient improves skin barrier function, has antioxidising properties, and is easily removable from the skin by endogenous enzymes.

 2.     Active ingredient for reactive and itchy scalp

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis are the major causes of itchy scalp. Seborrheic dermatitis affects from 1 to 5% of global population, while itchy scalp is present in 25% of adult population and 13% of people with chronic itch.

Scratching the itchy scalp leads to redness, scalp desquamation (dandruff) and inflammation. The ingredient has been developed to address these scalp conditions:

  • Reduction of inflammation and redness
  • Reduction in scalp desquamation and dandruff reappearance
  • Calms itchy scalp

Redness and inflammation in the scalp are produced when immune cells in the skin release inflammatory and pruritogenic mediators through degranulation. This ingredient acts on immune cells reducing the release of these molecules, this leads to a reduction in scalp redness and itchiness.

In addition, it acts as sensory neuron antagonist reducing itch from its origin. While routine use of this ingredient as hair shampooing, protects against itchy scalp, redness and reduces dandruff reappearance by decreasing scalp desquamation and flacking.


Designed to provide itch relief and improved skin properties, both ingredients can be formulated in various formats such as cream, body oil and lotion for skin and hair care applications. They are suitable for both adults and children.
