The market of personal care products is highly fragmented and competitive. Product development and innovation are key measures to gain competitive edge in the market. Performing tests on these products are essential in product development for product evaluation and regulatory purposes. However, animal study is currently widely banned, panel test has the drawback of wide personal bias, and current commercial skin mimics are expensive yet their performance is still far from real skin. Fabricated from a natural protein, silk artificial stratum corneum (SC) have similar keratin structure with real skin stratum corneum, the key component for skin barrier. Compared with other artificial-skin testing platform, silk artificial SC is more relevant to real skin in terms of skin-related products testing results and can also be customized for various skin types (dry/oily/combined). We are seeking for collaborations on manufacturing and products testing. Chemicals and consumers good company can be the customer for licensing the technology.

Raw materials: regenerated silk processed from silk fibers extracted from silkworms, PEG derivatives (poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate). Finished product can be tuned to different shape and thickness according to different needs.
Since 2013, as ethics for animal experiments has been strengthened in the European Union, artificial skin models have attracted attention as an alternative to animal testing for assessing the effectiveness, safety and toxicity of Skicare products. The developed silk fibroin membrane as artificial stratum corneum for cosmetics industry is able to provide realiable testing data at low cost for the development of skincare products.
