TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a non sulphated glycosaminoglycan found in the extracellular matrix (ECM). It forms a viscoelastic mesh that is capable of retaining water and thereby maintaining tissue volume. It is the major constituent in the vitreous humor and synovial fluid, and is used in the various medical and cosmetic application. However, in its free form, HA is rapidly degraded. The technology offers a solution to overcome this challenge.

TECHNOLOGY FEATURES & SPECIFICATIONS

The technology is a Hyaluronic Acid – Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (HA-EGCG) conjugate that have been demonstrated to form hydrogels via the oxidative coupling of EGCG moiety.

The HA-EGCG system possess bioactivities such as resistance to hyaluronidase-mediated degradation, inhibition of cell growth and scavenging of radicals, whereas unmodified HA shows no or limited activities. Test results (pictured) have shown that the hydrogels have resistance towards enzymatic degradation by hyaluronidase. 

The HA-EGCG hydrogel system, with in situ gelation and resistance toward hyaluronidase-mediated degradation, offers the advantages of injectability and prolonged residence time in the body. In vivo tests in mice also showed very positive results (pictured). 

 

POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

The HA-EGCG system hydrogel may be applied in the following areas for aesthetic/cosmetics procedures and biomedical purposes:

  • Cosmetic applications, including dermal filler; 
  • Viscoelastic material for ophthalmological surgery to prevent collapse of the anterior chamber; 
  • Viscosupplements such as for osteoarthritis treatment; restore viscoelasticity in arthritic joints; and
  • Sustained release drug delivery system.

Market Trends & Opportunities

The market is evolving rapidly due to the increasing adoption of aesthetic procedures in developed and developing regions. Increasing use of hyaluronic acid surfaces in cardiovascular implants, such as stents and vascular grafts, for improving the compatibility coupled with growing awareness about anti-aging products is fueling the growth. The efficacy and evident results of hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers also served to fuel demand.
