A company that is active in the additive manufacturing industry is currently seeking a clear and rigid polymeric material that is suitable for use with the 3D printers that they develop.

Generally, standard conventional polymers are not suitable because of its relatively weak material properties for their specific application. In addition, when conventional materials are employed, they are unable to be cured by the printer technology at a necessary production speed.

The company focuses on researching and developing 3D printers that cater for mass production and prototyping. They aim to grow their capabilities and product offerings for the 3D printers that they manufacture by looking for new polymers or to develop new co-polymers. The polymeric material should be rigid, transparent and printable by the printers manufactured by the company.

Technical Specifications

The organisation uses stereolithography technology to print the products. The following are specification requirements for the polymeric material:

  • Biocompatible (Class II or IIa)
  • Curing wavelength of material: 350 – 480nm (ranging from ultraviolet light to green light)
  • Curing lighting power density: 5 – 15 mW/cm2
  • Curing time should be no longer than 4 seconds
  • Achievable thickness: ≤0.5mm
  • Possesses good physical properties, such as rigidity, hardness and toughness
  • Possess a constant stress relaxation property
  • Transparent and clear when cured
  • Suitable for application in pH range 6 – 8
  • Able to withstand a high moisture environment
  • Able to function for at least 14 days while maintaining its integrity and under the environmental conditions, as stated above
