Background / Description

While many surface modification treatments can repel water-based liquids, very few can repel oil-based liquids. Materials that can repel oil-based liquids currently require environmentally unsustainable chemistries such as fluorocarbons. Many of these surface modification treatments do not resist simple abrasion, even a simple touch with your finger. Furthermore, many approaches for creating liquid-repelling surfaces also negatively impact the aesthetics of the treated item.

A consumer goods company is seeking novel self-cleaning / liquid repelling technologies, especially alternate surface modification technologies that controls the wetting, spreading and adhesion of water and oil-based soils. An environmentally safe, durable and surface friendly solution is sought.

Technical Specifications

Key requirements for the technologies are as follows:

  • Both water- and oil-based repellency
  • Durable and abrasion-resistant
  • Aesthetics: Providing superior protection against liquids while also improving (and not degrading) the aesthetics of the treated item
