Antimicrobial Zinc/Zinc Oxide Composite

Technology Overview

Increasing antimicrobial resistance has become a public health concern. In addition, current antimicrobial solutions have a risk of safety under prolonged use and leaching of the compound may negatively impact the environment. Many products have selective workability that target specific groups of bacteria, or require external stimulus such as photoirradiation to work.

This technology presents a zinc/zinc oxide composite with a core/shell structure that exhibits superior, wide spectrum antimicrobial activity through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that oxidises organic substances and is biocidal, enabling anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-odor properties simultaneously.

Technology Features & Specifications

  • Patented process that activates zinc oxide by creating a zinc/zinc oxide composite
  • Generates high concentration of ROS for wide spectrum antimicrobial activity, effective against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as fungus
  • Requires only air and/or water to exhibit its effect (as compared to other similar composites which also require UV light)
  • Does not cause antimicrobial resistance
  • Preferred pH environment ~6-8
  • High temperature resistance
  • Composite particles are micron-sized

Potential Applications

  • Textiles: Both organic and synthetic materials to provide antimicrobial textile that can be used for hospital privacy curtain, bath towel, head scarf, etc. This reduces microbial growth on fabrics and promote both personal and hospital hygiene.
  • Polymers: Compounded into thermal plastics or thermoset polymers e.g. PP, PS, ABS, PVC, PC, etc. for electrical appliances, pet products, baby products, etc.
  • Paints & Coatings
  • Personal Care: Diaper cream, sanitizer, deodorant, etc.

Customer Benefits

Hospital curtain is one of the contact points where bacteria attach and are spread to other individuals with weaker immune systems. By having antibacterial hospital curtains, the risk of infections acquired at hospitals or nursing homes could be reduced, thus providing a better hospital hygiene.

Head scarves are worn for extended period and often, due to heat and sweat, users experience discomfort like itch and rashes. With an antimicrobial head scarf, the amount of bacterial growth that causes discomfort could be lowered, promoting better personal hygiene and comfort.
