High-Yield Xylitol Production

Technology Overview

This green technology describes a flocculating yeast strain, Candida athensensis SB18, and its use in production of xylitol from up to 300 g/L D-xylose. Complete xylose consumption and a final xylitol concentration of 256.5 g/L was obtained. The xylitol yield is 0.870 g/g xylose, corresponding to 94.9% of the theoretical yield. In addition, Candida athensensis SB18 can convert the horticultural waste, hemicellulosic hydrolysate, to obtain up to 100 g/L xylitol. Strain SB18 has great potential for industrial xylitol bioproduction.
