Technology Overview

Water softening plants can produce temporary or permanent hard water for various reasons, which leads to the quick subsequent destruction of the downstream plants and their water treatment processes. Water treatment plants, like reverse osmosis can be blocked / fouled very quickly by hard water, for which reason the expensive membrane systems have to be replaced. When using evaporation plants (boilers etc.), the water hardness is deposited on the pipes and boiler walls as lime, which also affects the operation and performance of these plants. Therefore, it is important to cyclically control the soft water hardness in industrial plants.

Currently, manual sensor for water hardness analysis which involves the titration test using commercial indicators can only measure medium to high concentrations. Current automatic online water hardness measuring devices has high indicator (e.g. hydroxynaphthol) consumption costs, contaminate waste water with heavy metals (not ecological), requires higher maintenance and unable to analyse low hardness concentrations.

The online water hardness monitoring technology uses ion-selective electrodes (with sensor membrane) that have a high selectivity for calcium and magnesium ions. The sensor membrane diffuses calcium and magnesium ions from the sample liquid to the inner electrolyte in an effort to build an equal ion concentration on both sides of the membrane. The resulting electrical voltage is measured and evaluated to determine the water hardness. Depending on the number of calcium and magnesium ions, a low or high voltage is generated, which is transmitted to the electrical outlet.
