This new technology is an improved method to quantitatively diagnose scoliosis and clinical parameters of scoliosis patients. Current diagnosis method of observing the symmetricity of spine using qualitative method has its limitations in the detection of scoliosis in the lower back. X-ray diagnosis of scoliosis makes use of electromagnetic waves which has risks of carcinogenesis. A portable device created can quantitatively diagnose scoliosis and evaluate shoulder balance of scoliosis patients. It was programmed to measure and intuitively display the clinical parameters of scoliosis patients.
Scoliosis is a common spine problem caused by the lateral curvature of the spine. It is essential for physicians to check for the shoulder balance of scoliosis patients pre- and postoperatively to evaluate the outcome of a corrective surgery. Also, changes in shoulder height differences (SHD) act as a guide for the monitoring of scoliosis progression in patients. However, there are many drawbacks and limitations with the existing methods which causes the diagnosis of scoliosis and shoulder balance assessment to be ineffective and unreliable. This portable device can quantitatively diagnose scoliosis and evaluate shoulder balance of scoliosis patients. It was programmed to measure and intuitively display clinical parameters of scoliosis patients. The reliability of the device has been verified by spine surgeons through clinical testing. By providing convenient and accurate quantitative measurements, this device is better than the state-of-the-art technology as it is shown to help medical doctors in measuring the clinical parameters of scoliosis patients. The device also has great potential to be marketed as a conventional tool to be used by the public especially the scoliosis patients for their self-diagnosis and monitoring of their spinal curvature.
