Global opportunities are tremendous in today’s context, where consumers and governments are getting increasingly health conscious. There is a rising trend in specialty craft beers and probiotics functional food markets in excess of billions dollars. Consumers are also getting more adventurous and shifting away from mainstream products. Probiotic beer was conceived from our vision to offer consumers with healthier alcoholic beverage options, in the process, creating new consumption occasions.

However, probiotification of alcoholic beverages is a major technological challenge. These beverages contain many intrinsic antimicrobial compounds (ethanol, organic and hop iso-α-acids) that impair the growth and survival of probiotics. Through evidence-based research, we pioneered the world’s first patented probiotic beer by incorporating gut-friendly bacteria.

The invention of the probiotic beer addresses the needs of health-conscious beer consumers, as well as those who are unable to consume probiotic beverages due to lactose intolerance or allergies to dairy products. Probicient Pte Ltd. is currently looking for collaborators to work on the market commercialisation of the probiotic beer.

Technology Features & Specifications

Probiotification of beverages imparts additional benefits to the product by incorporating clinically-proven, gut-friendly bacteria, thus providing healthier alternatives to their regular counterparts. Nevertheless, maintaining sufficient probiotic viability in alcoholic drinks is a major technological challenge. These beverages contain many intrinsic antimicrobial compounds (e.g. ethanol, organic and hop iso-α-acids) that impair the growth and survival of probiotics. Through evidence-based research, we pioneered the world’s first patented probiotic beer.

A probiotic is defined as live microorganisms, which when consumed in sufficient amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. According to the International Scientific Association of Prebiotics and Probiotics (ISAPP), a minimum dosage is 1 billion live probiotics per day is recommended to confer a health benefit to the host.

Many commercial products that claim to contain “live probiotics” are unsubstantiated. Either the probiotics present are not live, in insufficient numbers, or non-proven probiotic strains are used. Our probiotic beers contain L. paracasei L26, which has been shown in animal studies to modulate gut health and the immune system. Our beers also contain at least 1 billion live probiotics per 100 ml, a dosage that meets ISAPP’s requirements. We are able to customise potential health benefits depending on the probiotic strains used. For the current versions of the beer, we are using a probiotic called Lactobacillus casei ssp. paracasei LAFTI L26. Animal studies have shown that it is able to enhance specific gut and systemic immune responses.

Potential Applications

According to the Orbis Research, the global craft beer market is predicted to hit USD 502.9 billion by 2025, with a significant increase in the demand for low alcohol by volume and flavoured beer. The rise of health conscious consumers also boosted the demand for low-calorie, gluten-free, alcohol-free and fortified/flavoured beers. The invention of probiotic beer lays the foundation for maintaining probiotic viability outside of dairy foods. Using our process, it is possible to spin-off into other alcoholic beverages (e.g. ciders, wines etc.).

With the absence of probiotic beers in the market, Probicient is set to exploit first mover’s advantage. We envision a new drinking culture, where friends and family will gather over a refreshing and thirst quenching probiotic beer after a long workout. Health conscious consumers, who lead an active lifestyle and enjoy hanging out with friends will be our main target consumers.

Customer Benefits

The development of a novel unfiltered,unpasteurized sour beer with a high live probiotic (Lactobacillus casei ssp. paracasei LAFTI® L26) count is able to address the needs of the growing number of health-conscious beer consumers, as well as those who are unable to consume probiotic beverages due to dietary intolerance or allergies. The potential health benefits can be customised by changing the probiotic strains used. In addition, the flavour (sourness and aroma) of the probiotic beers can be modified to suit customers’ preference.

We are committed in our vision to offer consumers healthier alcoholic beverages, compared to current commercial alcohol which do not contain probiotics. As an example, L. casei L26 has been shown to enhance gut health and immune system in animal studies However, we emphasise that probiotic beer should still be consumed in moderation. Consuming one serving of probiotic beer (330 mL) a day is sufficient to deliver the recommended daily intake of these beneficial microorganisms.
