Developed by an interdisciplinary team of academics with over a decade of dedication, Virtual Reality enabled Psychotherapy and Psychoeducation Solution (VRPS) aims to utilize the latest generation of virtual reality and mixed reality technologies to provide multisensory, highly interactive, safe and embarrassment-free environment for the professionals. The solution comes as packages. With clearly defined objectives, each package is for a specific domain, such as art therapy for abused children, social adaptation training for school-aged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), affective learning for young adults with severe mental retardation, etc. Besides computer software and hardware, the packages also contain necessary supplementary materials and professional training services.
Unlike traditional approaches which usually need very specific settings to facilitate specific purposes, VRPS uses a customized virtual reality or mixed reality settings to cover multiple psychotherapeutic and psychoeducational purposes by simply swapping the computer software. This allows professional users, such as hospitals, special schools, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), etc., to quickly and adaptively deploy psychotherapy and/or psychoeducation serveries to their targeted beneficiaries. Moreover, the nature of virtual reality and mixed reality makes the process more interesting and safer to the targeted beneficiaries, when being compared with the traditional approaches. Empirical studies done by the team have shown strong evidences regarding the effectiveness and feasibilities of the solution, based on large-scale quantitative analysis.
VRPS has already been applied in various settings in Hong Kong, including special schools and training centres of NGOs. Pre-designed VRPS packages can be quickly deployed to our collaborators for trial runs. Quantitative and qualitative data will be collected during the trial runs as references for any necessary adaptations and/or customizations. To further scale up the number of beneficiary from this technology, similar application approaches can be applied to other countries/regions via local collaborators.
