Technology Overview

A Visual Freshness Sensors is a smart label that shows the accumulated time-temperature history of a product. The technology meets the needs of industry mega trends by providing information regarding the traceability, safety, health and wellness of a product. The sensors are designed to visually indicate the true shelf-life of the product they are monitoring, replacing obsolete date code marking with dynamic and intelligent sensors that visually indicate accurate shelf life status in real-time.

This technology is used in the food, pharma and cosmetics industries. The sensors can be calibrated to suit any product with a shelf life affected by time and temperature. 

 

Technology Features & Specifications

The process is based on chemically dissolving an aluminum layer at a rate that is temperature dependent. On the production line, a reactive layer is applied to the aluminum layer and the chemical process begins. The proprietary active element within the adhesive etches the aluminum, revealing the color/visual signal underneath it.

Thanks to this advanced technology the sensors change color at a temperature-dependent rate. The higher the temperature is, the faster the color changes, closely matching the actual behavior of the monitored products. The sensors can be calibrated to match different shelf-lives, ranging from hours to years.

In addition to the visual color change, users can also read the sensor via a smartphone, creating a digital data point of the product’s freshness at that point in time. That data can be transmitted and used for supply chain analysis, traceability, and marketing.
