By leveraging on the existing IEEE 802.11 network wireless local area networks infrastructures, such as WIFI routers, in large numbers of commercial and residential buildings and the mobile devices carried by customers, the proposed WiFi-based Indoor Localization and Navigation System can provide real-time indoor positioning and navigation systems for customers.
The unique feature of our WiFi-based Indoor Localization and Navigation System is built upon passive cooperation of customers only which does not interrupt their daily lives. Instead of modifying the hardware or software of customers' mobile devices, we upgrade the software of the existing commercial WiFi Access Points in the indoor environment to become WiFi sniffers, which can detect the Received Signal Strength (RSS) of each mobile device. The RSS and MAC addresses of mobile devices are then sent to a location processor. The location processor will leverage on appropriate localization algorithms to figure out the position of each mobile device and thus its user.
This system can provide real-time positioning and navigation service for all occupants in ubiquitous indoor environments, such as airports, hospitals, museums, shopping malls, stadiums and universities. In addition, it can analyze the human activities patterns based on the historical occupancy distribution, in order to forecast energy consumption in indoor environments. Furthermore, the safest and most efficient evacuation path can be provided for customers during emergency situation. Customers could plan their routes in a more reasonable way based on the analysis of the real-time human flow in indoor environments from our system.
